PUPILLAGE
Our policy is to look to the long term and recruit pupils who have potential for a career with Farrar’s Building. We are looking for dedicated people who are ready for the hard work and responsibility of practice to become our next generation. Former pupils have developed first-rate practices with Chambers. Three of our present silks, Gerard Elias, John Leighton Williams and Alan Jeffreys, undertook their pupillages here. Many previous pupils have had distinguished careers with Farrar’s Building before taking judicial appointments on the Circuit and High Court bench. The late Lord Williams of Mostyn was a member of chambers when he was appointed Attorney General.
Farrar’s Building is an outstanding chambers for pupils to obtain wide experience during their training. Pupillage is organised in three four-month periods with pupil supervisors whose practices focus on different areas of specialisation within Chambers’ fields of expertise. The second four months is dedicated to assisting pupils make the transition from non-practicing to practicing. During this period pupils will be in court with junior members of chambers on a regular basis, experiencing the type of work they will be expected to undertake as soon as they are on their feet.
Two twelve-month pupilages are offered, commencing in October each year. For the session commencing in October 2009, the pupillage award will be £20,000 for each pupil, of which £5,000 can be drawn down in the preceding year. The balance is paid monthly over twelve months. Unlike many other sets, our pupils have the incentive of receiving earnings from their own work in the second six months. In previous years diligent pupils have earned between £10,000 and £15,000, in addition to their pupillage awards.
Chambers funds the attendance of pupils at the Bar Conference and circuit advocacy courses. In previous years many pupils have enjoyed participating in the Florida Bar Association’s annual advocacy course.
Pupils are provided with access to the Internet and various legal websites.
Farrar's Building is a member of OLPAS for the summer season.
MINI PUPILLAGE
Farrar’s Building offers a three-day mini-pupillage to suitably qualified students (aged 18+). These placements are at Easter (March - April) and Summer (June - July). We offer between 8-10 places in each session. On each day, a mini-pupil has the opportunity to accompany a member of chambers to court or to work in chambers.
Mini-pupillages for 2008 have been allocated. If you wish to apply for a mini-pupillage in 2009, please do so after 1st October 2008 by sending a CV by e-mail with your reasons for applying to Tom Bourne-Arton's e-mail address (TBArton@farrarsbuilding.co.uk). The deadline for all applications is Friday, 23rd January 2009. Please indicate on the application whether you wish to apply for mini-pupillage in Easter, Summer or both.
