James is a highly experienced Personal Injury and Property Damage barrister with a strong record of successful outcomes in complex Multi-Track claims.

James is instructed by Claimants and Defendants in a wide range of Personal Injury matters involving serious injury and death. In terms of liability work James has a developing a niche practice in E-Scooter and E-bike accidents and has long-standing expertise in accidents at work.  His quantum caseload generally consists of claims involving brain injuries, amputation, serious orthopaedic injuries, pain conditions and psychological / psychiatric injuries.

A significant portion of James’ Personal Injury practice is defending fraudulent claims. James acts for a number of leading insurers in matters where there are allegations of dishonesty and/or malingering.

In all practice areas James is regularly instructed to advise, draft pleadings, attend interlocutory hearings and conduct JSMs / trials.  James is frequently asked to assist with expert technical / medicolegal evidence, to advise on strategy / tactics, where liability or credibility is in issue and in complex quantum disputes.

Acted for Defendant in last minute instruction in £2m claim (court adjournment meaning trial counsel not available) in application to rely on (inter alia) surveillance / social media evidence at a PTR of before a s9 Judge.  Application granted and the claim quickly settled on a cost inclusive basis thereafter (at approximately 1/8th of total claim for damages and costs).

C v A and 1 other

Acting for Defendant where Claimant alleges a fall on stairs at the Defendant’s premises.  Pleaded at approximately £500k.  Liability, causation and quantum all in issue.  Trial timetable reset following surveillance and social media evidence. Matter settled for less than 1/10 of the pleaded damages.

Property Damage

James has an established Property Damage practice.

Much of his work is acting in claims for damage caused by fire and flood where allegedly defective work, plant or products are blamed.

James has particular expertise in escapes of water (domestic, commercial and industrial settings) and fire (particularly electrical including battery fires).

Primarily James’ time off work is spent with his wife and young children. He enjoys cooking (occasionally competently) and tries to balance out a love of good food with weight training, running and basketball.
